In recent months, I’ve felt especially sore, my skin is dry and flaky, and the bags under my eyes are visible more often than not. I would chalk it up to lack of sleep, but Fay has actually been sleeping and napping like a dream (*KNOCKS WOOD*), despite a chronic runny nose. No, it’s almost certainly a combination of lack of exercise, a past-its-prime mattress, work stress and, well, parenting a rambunctious toddler. So tell me…
How do you pamper yourself when you’re feeling run-down and achy? Jonathan suggested we try to book time with a chiropractor for a neck and back adjustment, plus 90 minute massages. I can’t say I’d argue with that, but man — who has the time?
I’m not great at taking care of my body, I admit, though one thing I have been good about doing for myself these last several years is getting my hair dyed and cut. Every 6-7 weeks for the past 3 1/2 years, I’ve trucked myself 40 minutes across the East Bay to see my friend Mary Ella, a bonafide angel, who works at an Aveda salon in Emeryville. Every visit to her feels like two hours at a spa; not only does she cover my grays with the gentle precision of a Renaissance painter, but her hair washing includes a scalp, neck, arm, and hand massage, all while every bit of dye is rinsed out (really, all of it) and my hair is wrapped in a nice, hot towel. It’s blissful magic and worth every penny.
Coming out of my visit to her this last Saturday, my dark mane perfectly blown out like a British princess, I was reminded how important it is to make time for true relaxation and pampering; even the tiniest bit of it makes me feel so much better. So I bought some of this aptly-named scented oil for my wrists as a reminder to myself to continue doing better.
Since this week is already shaping up to be another doozy, I’ve also decided to take no less than two bubble baths this week. A simple start, but one I’m sure will at least ease the mounting tension in my shoulders.
What about you? Anything special you’ve been doing to relax lately? What’s your favorite way to pamper yourself these days?
Let me know in the comments! In the meantime, just imagine me like this:
